
On Thursday, May 22nd, a 16-year-old girl was spat on a by a 15-year-old boy who later tried to pull off her hijab whilst they were traveling in an elevator at the High School for Law Enforcement and Public Safety in Jamaica, New York City.
At approximately 11:15 am the teenage suspect was riding in an elevator with the victim, he called the Muslim girl a “Muslim b****!”. He then spat on the victim before lunging at her, grabbed her headscarf and attempted to pull off her hijab.
After the elevator ride, the girl reported the incident to the school officials, who in turn reported the incident to the police.
Department of Education spokeswoman Toya Holness said, “This incident is troubling, and this type of behavior has no place in our schools. We are providing the school with additional support to ensure appropriate follow-up action is taken,”.
The suspect was charged with aggravated harassment and disorderly conduct. He will be charged as a juvenile and so his name was not released.
