On Saturday, 7th January, Simon's Town Mosque's caretaker found a pig's snout and pigs blood left outside of the historic religious building, which has been open for almost one hundred years.
The mosque is located in Simon's Town, just south of Cape Town, South Africa. The mosque's caretaker arrived at the mosque at 8:30 am and spotted the pig's snout placed on the gate of the building. The incident is believed to happen after Fajr between the times of 4 am and 8 am.
The desecration of the mosque came after an outburst by Liam Christian Ferreira, who wrote, "I think it’s a crime that no one is standing up to those Muslim bastards blaring their call to pray 5 times a day over massive speakers, why do I need to put up with an Arabic tradition created in the dessert [sic] thousands of years ago." and went on to write "Stand up for yourselves!!! Burn it down!!!".
He later commented on the mosques page condemning the vandalism.
The Mosque officials responded to the desecration on Facebook, "The Prophet was not indecent, he was not obscene, he would not shout in the markets, and he would not respond to an evil deed with an evil deed, but rather he would pardon and overlook." They went on to say "In today's highly polarized world, there are forces who want to create strife and create hatred among people. As Muslims, our duty is to spread Salam, peace."
The perpetrator of the vandalism has not yet been caught.
